Demolition of Centennial Mills Building: Historic Portland Places

Photo of the controlled demolition of the water tower on top of the historic Centennial Mills Building in Portland, Oregon. This event took place two weeks after a fire gutted the seven story building on August 2, 2026 leaving just the shell of the outside walls. The explosion of the water (pictured here) is part of the demolition effort to bring the remaining four walls of the building down. The Centennial Mills Building was originally known as the Crown Mills Building. It was part of a complex of 12 buildings that made up the Crown Mills flour mill along the Willamette River in Northwest Portland. The mill operated from 1919 to 2000. Crown Mills was sold in the 1949 and became the Centennial Mills flour mill. The mill continued to operate another 50 years before it's closure in 2000. Most of the buildings in the complex were demolished between 2015 and 2016 leaving just the building seen the photo and one other. Now, after 100 years, it is almost all completely gone. Now you can own a print to commemorate this now lost piece of history.
