Bridge of the Gods-Gateway to the Columbia Gorge: Oregon Landscape Photography

This is a photo of the Historic Bridge of The Gods taken from Thunder Island, a little strip of land between the main channel of the Columbia River and the Cascade Canal. The photo is of the south end of the bridge near the town of Cascade Locks, Oregon in the Columbia Gorge. This photo was taken on a clear-sunny fall day with the grass on the island so green and so manicured, it could be used to play golf. The Bridge of the Gods is a Steel-Cantilevered Through Truss Bridge that was opened in 1929 and raised 44 feet in 1938 when the construction of the Bonneville Dam raised river levels. It currently operates as a toll bridge. This Bridge of the Gods is the modern man-made bridge across the Columbia River that is named after the geologic Bridge of the Gods, which was a natural dam created when the ancient Bonneville Landslides blocked the flow of the river completely. Carbon dating suggests this event took place around 1450 and was associated with a massive earth quake. Native Americans crossing the natural feature aptly named it the Bridge of the Gods. Eventually the Columbia River built up enough pressure to punch it's way through the dam and wash away the debris. The river cresting over the remains of the dam created the Cascade Rapids, which was submerged with the construction of Bonneville Dam in 1938. Great picture to hang on the wall in your living room, office, hallway or bedroom.
