Bridge Of The Gods-Columbia River Gorge: Oregon Landscape Photography

This is a photo of the Historic Bridge of The Gods from the Cascade Canal near the town of Cascade Locks in the Columbia Gorge. The Cascade Canal was a man-made waterway that was channeled from the Columbia River to divert ship traffic around the Cascade Rapids in the Columbia River. The photo was taken at the site of the old Cascade Locks. The Cascade Locks were a series of locks that were built in the canal to raise or lower ships/boats to the river levels at the east and west end of the canal. The locks operated from 1896 to 1938 when construction of the Bonneville Dam 5 miles down river submerged the Cascade Rapids, and the locks were rendered obsolete and therefore dismantled. The concrete walls on each side of the canal (on the lower left corner of the picture) are the only remnants of the locks. They make great leading lines to the bridge. The little pond in the foreground with the still reflection of the bridge was created when the river level was raised as a result of the construction of the dam. Perfect picture to hang on the wall in your living room, office, hallway or bedroom.
