Historic Oneonta Tunnel (East End)-Columbia River Gorge: Oregon Landscape Photography

This is a photo of the east end of the Oneonta Tunnel in the Columbia River Gorge. The tunnel was first opened in 1914 as part of the legendary Columbia River Highway. It served as a vital link for travelers making it possible for them to pass through the rugged mountain range to be able to reach their destination, whether it was Portland and the Oregon coast to the west, or The Dalles and Boise to the east. It was closed to traffic in 1948 when the new highway (the highway in the foreground of the picture) was re-routed around the mountain instead of through it. Not to be forgotten or left behind, the tunnel was restored in 2009 and used as a biking path. The tunnel was almost destroyed by the Eagle Creek fire in 2017 and had to be re-built. This photo was taken in 2011, 2 years after it opened as a bike path and 5 years before the fire, which make this somewhat of a rare photo. Perfect to hang on the wall in your living room, office, hallway or bedroom.
