Cascade Locks and the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler: Oregon Landscape Photography

This is a photo of the Cascade Canal and the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler near the town of Cascade Locks. This photo was taken looking up the canal, which is a man-made canal that was channeled off the Columbia River to divert ship traffic around the Cascade Rapids. The Cascade Locks was a series of locks that were built in the canal to raise or lower ships/boats to the river levels at the east and west end of the canal. The locks operated from 1896 to 1938 when construction of the Bonneville Dam 5 miles down river submerged the Cascade Rapids, and the locks were rendered obsolete and therefore removed. The canal is the only remnants of the locks. The photo is looking at the back of the Columbia Gorge Sternwheeler. The Sternwheeler has operated for 40 years and continues it's tradition of operating fine dining and sightseeing cruises along the Columbia River during the Summer months, and along the Willamette River in Portland during the Winter months. Perfect picture to hang on the wall in your living room, office, hallway or bedroom.
