Abandoned Sawmill-Columbia River Gorge: Washington Landscape Photography

Photo taken of an old rustic-abandoned sawmill in the Columbia River Gorge. This is the old sawmill of the Broughton Lumber Company in Hood, Washington. The sawmill operated from 1923 to 1986 and was part of a two-plant operation. There was a second plant 11 miles back up in the mountains in a little town called Willard. The Willard plant took in trees that had been logged and cut them into cants. The cants were then floated down the famous Broughton Flume to the sawmill pictured here in Hood, Washington, which was just across the Columbia River from Hood River, Oregon. This method of floating the logs from the forests down to the sawmill revolutionized transportation until modern methods rendered it obsolete. The sawmill operated from 1923 to 1986. Unfortunately, the large timbers that the Broughton mill was designed to cut dwindled in supply to the point where it was no longer profitable to keep the mill going, so it closed for good in 1986. Notice the old buildings slowly rotting away like a corpse. The last remnants of a place that produced 3 billion board feet of lumber over 63 years, produced lumber that built the bridges on the Columbia River Highway, and more importantly, it produced a brotherhood of men. It is slowly fading away as a distant memory as the freight trains pass by on the railroad tracks in the foreground and cars pass by over the highway 14 overpass in the background. Keep the memory of this place alive by hanging this photo on the wall in your living room, office, hallway or bedroom.
